MCC-NH Gas Fitters Practice Exam

The use of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) in gas applications is primarily associated with vent piping on gas regulators. PVC is not suitable for the distribution of gas or for the direct storage of gas due to its limited temperature and pressure ratings, which can lead to failure under the conditions typically present in gas systems. Vent piping is designed to allow safe venting of excess pressure or gas to the outside atmosphere, and PVC is often used in this capacity because it is resistant to corrosion and easy to install.

It's also important to note that while PVC can be used for joining fittings, this is typically not in the context of gas applications. In gas systems, materials such as metal or specific types of thermoplastic are preferred to ensure safety and compliance with codes. Therefore, vent piping is the common and appropriate application for PVC in the context of gas systems.
